Starting in 2026, Maine will begin removing many consumer products containing “forever chemicals” (PFAS) from store shelves as part of a sweeping new law passed in 2024. Products like non-stick cookware, cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and dental floss will be banned if they contain intentionally added PFAS, unless deemed “currently unavoidable.” State regulators recently rejected most exemption requests, signaling a strict approach to enforcement. The law, one of the first of its kind in the U.S., received bipartisan support and was signed by Governor Janet Mills. The bans will phase in gradually, with full implementation expected by 2040.
