Three months after Maine’s largest firefighting foam spill at Brunswick Executive Airport, toxic PFAS levels in Harpswell Cove have largely returned to pre-spill concentrations, according to preliminary data. Despite this recovery, scientists from Bigelow Laboratory caution that PFAS compounds may still linger in sediment, potentially posing long-term environmental risks. The ongoing three-year study, involving nearly 100 sites across Casco Bay, aims to better understand PFAS persistence and inform public health decisions. Cleanup efforts are underway, and monitoring will continue through August 2025.
