The Community Environmental Health Laboratory at MDI Biological Laboratory is launching a project that aims to produce new insights on PFAS risks at school and at home, while also engaging local citizens in a proactive response. The project is focused on the Tremont area of Mount Desert Island. In 2024, PFAS were detected in the drinking water of Tremont Consolidated School at a level slightly above Maine’s limit of 20 nanograms per liter.

Project participants will have their home water supplies tested for PFAS (free of charge), answer a drinking water and dietary survey, have cardiometabolic measurements taken, and take a finger-prick test to measure PFAS levels in their blood.
